Best of 2016

A tree says: My strength is trust. I know nothing about my fathers, I know nothing about the thousand children that every year spring out of me. I live out the secret of my seed to the very end, and I care for nothing else. I trust that God is in me. I trust that my labor is holy. Out of this trust I live.  --Hermann Hesse

I couldn't have planned the way this year turned out.  I made a list of goals, certainly, but I lost that list.  If you're interested to read about my wins and losses and my plan for the next trip around the sun - you can do so here

Over the last 365 (or so) days I made so many friends, drove miles and miles, hiked mountains, learned, laughed, and cried.  To my friends, old and new, the folks that fed me yummy southern food, let me sleep in spare bedrooms, and my colleagues that let me work along side them - thank you.

A special thanks to - Megan, Justin, Alicia, Lindsay, Julia, Molly, Val, Jessie, Evelyn, and Stephanie.

Here are some of my favorites from 2016.  Catch you all next year.

Intimate Portraits | Personal Work | Norfolk, VA

Jessie.

When I picture her in my mind, I imagine her laughing her amazing laugh, her mouth in an open smile.  But that's at a coffee shop, at work, or on the street.  I often wonder what people are like by themselves, when no one is watching.  The other side, the quiet side.

Jessie was kind enough to help me explore this idea one afternoon in my faux studio that should really be my office if it's ever finished.

All shots taken with my 5diii and EOS 1n with HP5 and Ilford Delta 3200.

Audrey | Bookstore Portraits | Ghent, Norfolk, VA

I've been experimenting with 35mm film in my personal work and today, I thought I'd share one of my recent sessions with you.  A big thanks to Indie Film Lab for doing such a superb job processing and scanning my film and certainly to Audrey for being a wonderful friend to hang out with to shoot random portraits in a random spot.  You humored me so well.

This session was shot on Ilford HP5 with my Canon EOS 1-N and my Canon 5d Mark III.
